In Maldives a resort is usually an island by itself, having its own white sandy beaches and natural swimming pools of salty lagoons enclosed by rich house reefs. The facilities and services offered by the resorts vary widely with some of the resort islands being specified for certain visitors. For example a bigger resort may be crowdy, and ideal for families and friends where varieties of activities may be available, while a smaller resort may be specified for couples and have a quite environment with romantic spots and less activities.

The activities offered also differ mostly according to the nature of the resorts diving and snorkeling may be more appropriate while surfing will be the best option in the others.

The accommodation ranges from detached individual cottages to beach front bungalows. Most resorts have restaurants catering to a wide range of dishes of different countries and bars serving exotic wines and alcoholic beverages.

Maldives consist of 99% water, is not a surprise that the resorts offer numerous water sports, ranging from snorkeling and diving, wind surfing, jet skiing, catamaran sailing, banana boat riding, luxury cruises and etc. In addition to this, travel packages such as island hopping, island excursions. Night fishing and sunset fishing trips, dolphin watching and barbecues on secluded beaches are also offered in the up-market hotels.
